Testosterone Prescribing As Part Of Your Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Our policy
Following a review of current clinical guidance, prescribing responsibilities, and patient safety considerations, our practice will no longer be initiating or continuing prescriptions for testosterone. This decision has been made to ensure that prescribing remains aligned with specialist recommendations and is managed safely and appropriately.
Testosterone is not routinely prescribed in primary care for HRT and requires careful assessment, monitoring, and dose adjustment by a clinician with specific expertise. There are potential risks associated with testosterone therapy, including but not limited to:
- Cardiovascular complications (such as increased risk of heart disease)
- Adverse effects on lipid profiles
- Liver function abnormalities
- Unintended androgenic effects (e.g., acne, hair growth, voice changes)
- Risk of inappropriate dosing without specialist oversight
Given these considerations, it is important that testosterone therapy is prescribed and monitored by a specialist who can ensure that treatment remains safe, effective, and evidence-based.
If you are currently receiving testosterone as part of your HRT, you will need to contact the clinician or service that originally initiated this treatment (for example, a menopause specialist or private provider) to arrange ongoing prescriptions and follow-up care.
We will, of course, continue to support your general healthcare needs and are happy to liaise with your specialist where appropriate.
